The Gift of Connection

As I sit down to  write today, December 25th has passed, most gifts usually given at this time of year have been exchanged as whether people celebrate a traditional Christmas or not, many exchange gifts during this holiday season. There is the joy of giving and the joy of receiving. It is an opportune time to reflect on what we have to share and give, not only at this time of year or when a birthday is celebrated; what we have to  share and give that is not seen by the eye, that cannot be bought in a store. Do you have talents and gifts you want to share with others and yet are reluctant to do so? Is there someone you’d like to reach out to and have yet to do so because you are unsure what kind of response you will get? Are there things you would like to do and feel you don’t have time to do them? Are you ignoring what you could do to take better care of yourself? We are still living in restrictive times where travel is limited or not allowed at all however we can still pick up a phone or reach out for a video chat. Let us all reach out, not only at Christmas time, at all times of the year as that one time you connect with someone may be a time when that call is most needed and makes all the difference in someone’s day. Some calls will be met with delight and at times the person may be too busy to even chat for a minute or  you may wonder why you even took the time to call. That does not matter - what is important is you did your part to reach out and you took the steps to connect no matter how the call transpired. Some may have moved on and not be at all interested in staying in touch, well at least there is no need to guess anymore and you can move on too. When the internet first came out it was so wonderful to find old schoolfriends again and I managed to connect with someone who was a close friend in high school. We had lost touch having both moved around in several countries over the  years. I was so excited to call her to find out  how she was and what was happening in her life. I am not sure if I connected at an inconvenient time but the excitement was certainly one-sided. Perhaps it was due to the fact that we had not talked in over twenty years, whatever the reason, my call was not met with any enthusiasm at all and that was the last time we spoke. Okay, a friendship was not rekindled that particular time. That has not stopped me from connecting with others when the opportunity comes my way. I have other friends where the connection is easy, a year may go by before we next chat and it is like no time has passed at all and we pick up where we left off.  These days I go where I am welcome and if no longer welcome I move on without taking it personally. If I don’t reach out I won’t know if I’m welcome or not. I am continually grateful for all those who welcome me and I feel blessed to know so many kind people. As we get closer to 2022, a year of Embracing Change may all who walk this Earth feel welcome somewhere, somehow and may we be able to share our gifts and talents with many.
